Why doesn't entering something (like a donation or medical expense) impact my return?
by: Better Tax
Here are some common reasons why your refund might not change after you add something to your return:
- The optimizer assigned the item to your partner. Many credits and deductions (like donations or medical expenses) can be claimed by either person, so we use default rules to place them where they help most. Allocations will change as you prepare your returns and when you optimize them. You can override these allocations in the Review section.
- It is a non-refundable credit. These credits can reduce tax owing to zero but they cannot create or increase a refund.
- For medical expenses, the total is below the allowable threshold, which depends on your net income.
- A required "type" or category was not selected. We use those selections to place the amount on the correct line.
