What is a NETFILE access code?
by: Better Tax
A NETFILE access code is an optional extra layer of security that the CRA uses to confirm your identity when you file online.
If you are filing a return for the first time you won't have (and don't need) an Access code.
On your paper or PDF Notice of Assessment for 2024:
- Your Access code is not labelled.
- It's an 8-character code (in small little characters) right below "Date issued" in the top right corner.
In your CRA Account:
- Go to Tax Returns.
- Open your Notice of Assessment for 2024.
- Find your Access code below the "Notice details" box, on the right side.
What if I don't have (or can't find) my Access code?
- It's ok; this code is optional.
- You won't be able to use any information from your 2025 tax return when confirming your identity with the Canada Revenue Agency (e.g., calling in) and you'll need to validate your identity in another way.
