How do I switch to Better Tax from another software?
by: Better Tax
Good choice! Breaking up with your old tax software is easier than you think.
If you have a CRA login or a Notice of Assessment from last year, we recommend tracking those down before you begin.
Step 1: Basic Information
Open Better Tax and enter some basic information (like your name and where you live).
Step 2: Auto-fill My Return (optional) and amounts carried-forward from prior years
If you have a CRA account, run Auto-fill My Return. The CRA will send over the most common carryforward amounts along with any slips that are available.
If you don't have a CRA account or can't use Auto-fill, no problem: you can get the same information from your most recent Notice of Assessment. You can enter all these amounts in our Prepare section—find them using our robust search box or add them to the Last year's information section.
Auto-fill My Return does not send us Saskatchewan graduate retention carryforward, if any. If this is relevant to you, find this on your Notice of Assessment.
When you might need last year's return or software:
- Unused moving expenses: form T1-M.
- Unused work-from-home or temporary relocation expenses: form T777.
- Self-employment or rental CCA tables: forms T776, T2042, T2121, or T2125.
- Unused donations or student loan interest: PDF summary page or "optimization" section of your former software.
- Deferred securities option benefits: Enter the closing balance (from last year's T1212).
- Minimum tax carryover: Find this in part 8 of form T691 if you had to pay alternative minimum tax.
Step 2: Prepare your return
Navigate through Better Tax or use the search box to add slips, credits, etc. to your return. And pat yourself on the back for your good life choices.
