Does Auto-fill do everything?
by: Better Tax
For some people, yes, running Auto-fill My Return will add every tax slip they need. However, if you are claiming almost credit or deduction you'll probably need to add a few things yourself.
We love Auto-fill My Return but there are a few limitations to keep in mind:
- It includes most slips and carryforwards, but not everything.
- It does not include a lot of your tax credit information (like your childcare expenses, donation receipts, etc.).
- Many slips aren't due to the CRA until the end of February (and sometimes even March), on top of that the CRA doesn't always process slips immediately, so you might be better off filing later in April if you are going to rely on data from Auto-fill My Return.
The CRA's list of information available through Auto-fill My Return includes these examples, when they apply to your return:
- Employment and other income slips, such as T4 and T5 slips
- RRSP contribution receipts, FHSA slips, and tuition slips
- Amounts such as your RRSP deduction limit and unused tuition credits
- Tax instalments you've paid to the CRA
What appears depends on the tax year and what the CRA has available when you useAuto-fill My Return. Compare the imported information with your own slips and records, then add anything missing. You'll usually enter receipts for medical expenses and donations yourself.
Once you're happy with your return, go to File to submit it. Auto-fill My Return only brings information into your return; it doesn't send your completed return to the CRA.
